Independence Pass 2019

 
This picture was taken only a few hundred yards from our rented house as we started on our way.


 
We found this mule deer doe.

 
There were several avalanches on the road that had been cleaned off only about a week earlier.







 
As we got closer to the top of the pass, we couldn't resist this picture.






 
Look closely and the next picture and you can see where snowmobile tracks are.







 
We finally reached the top of the pass.

You can just barely see the top of the rest rooms, that weren't open.  They had brought portable units for folks to use.






 
We were on our way back down in the next pictures.







 
The next one is of the big front end loader used to help clear the road.  Notice the chains on the tires.

 
In the little town of Twin Lakes, they have this sheriff's car the a dummy person to fool folks.

 
I was curious about the water crossing going into the Half Moon trail so we spent about an hour driving up to this point.  You have to drive into the water here and back out at the large tree on the other side.

 
Our Jeep is sitting at the point of entrance.  Looked too deep for us to try it.

The following is a menagerie of pictures taken over a period of about 14 days in the Leadville area. 2018 Camp Hale

Toni and I took the Maverick out to check out the trails in Camp Hale .  During World War II, the army trained the 10th Mountain Division consisting of 15,000 troops on how to combat under extreme winter conditions.  Only a few remnants are left of the camp and the area has been turned over for recreational use involving thousands of acres. We have a map of the area and simply took the first turn that took us up into the mountains.  We drove a total of 30 miles on this trail for over a total of 5.5 hours.  There are two other major trails but we didn't have time to check them out.     At the top of the first climb, we noticed this side trail, so we decided to take it.   It turned out to be somewhat of a mistake, since it has multiple rocky spots.   Lunch break time.   We met a couple of units in a very narrow spot.  Literally only 1/2 inch between us.   Several ...

Lots of Snow This Year

This is a view out the front deck on the house we have rented for the summer.   Just to prove that you don't have to have a monster tow rig.  The car is a VW towing a trailer (taken in front of the Safeway store in Leadville.) I was antsy so I decided to see what it was like attempting to go up Hagerman Pass near Leadville.  I got this far and had to put the Jeep in 4WD and lock the axles to go farther. The depth of the snow was very deceptive.   Went a little farther and discovered the snow on the road was getting deeper so I turned around.   This is Torquios Lake.  The expert figured out how much runoff there is going to be due to the snow melt and had let the water down to make room for it.
