Leadville, Colorado 2018
June 28, 2018. We sold our motor home last year so we have rented a house in Leadville for July and August 2018. We really enjoy the trails around Silverton and Lake City but we were unable to secure a reasonably priced home to rent in the area.
Lance with his fiancé Kaci, and Bryce, Deb, Gracie will be coming out beginning on August 4th to stay a week with us. Bryce will be driving out in his pickup and will bring the motorcycle he bought. The other four will be flying into the Denver airport. We are really looking forward to the trip.
We don't know the trails around Leadville but it appears there will be some nice passes with beautiful views. We have a Can Am Maverick side by side that we will be taking with us on a trailer behind the Jeep. Our main challenge has been to load everything we feel we will need for the two months into the back of the Jeep but I think we probably have been successful.
Here is a picture of our Can Am Maverick.
This is Tuesday, July 3, 2018 and we are just now beginning to get acclimated to the elevation. We really like the house we have rented and here are a few pictures of it.
As you can see, we haven't even unloaded the Maverick yet. We plan to go in the Jeep this morning to find where the trails near town start. We learned yesterday that Leadville allows ATVs to drive in town to the restaurants and the trails! Exciting news.
We went in the Jeep to be sure we knew where to find the trails to Hagerman Pass and Mosquita Pass for when we head out with the Maverick. The first are from Hagerman:
The last two are of Turquoise Lake. The following were taken from Mosquito Pass. We didn't go very far since we both hate rough roads when driving the Jeep. Mosquito Pass is by far the most interesting.
Lots of old mines in the area. We plan to go back with the Maverick so we can explore more!
Maverick is unloaded with our Texas flag proudly flying. The first day I got it on the road, I got stopped by a deputy sheriff and was given a little talking to. I was legal so he let me go. May be the danged Texas flag!
July 5, 2018. The following pictures were taken as we drove the Mosquito Pass in the Maverick.
The first 5 miles were really easy but the last 3 miles to the top were just about the worst we have encountered. Lots of time we drove 3 MPH with 8 MPH every once in a while. No way will I be interested in driving the Jeep up this since it is so rough. It won't hurt the Jeep but will literally throw us from on side to the other!
July 7, 2018. We decided to try a new loop that goes by St. Elmo town and on through Pitkin. The loop turned into a 55 mile trip that took us well over 4 hours. The following pictures pretty much speak for themselves.
Today, we took Highway 24 north out of Leadville searching for some very scenic drives that could be fun for the family using the Jeep, the Maverick, and Bryce's motorcycle that he plans to bring. On August 4th, Lance, his friend Kaci, Deb (Bryce's wife), Gracie (their daughter), and Bryce are coming to stay with us. We believe the Homestake Road will be a route that everyone can enjoy.
Here are pictures that don't really do the area justice.
A huge pipe is actually pouring water into this lake. Not a clue where it comes from.
At the end of the trail is this beautiful small trout lake. There are really neat hiking trails on this route.

This little plaque is at the top of the pass.
